Editorial Reviews

Thieves and Liars follows the story of three different families affected by the giant underground illegal economy that emerged and continues to grow since Puerto Rico became the main port of entry for cocaine into the U. S. east coast. Wanda is a single mother who refuses to give in to a corrupt government official running the airport where she operates a small hangar. Isabel, the divorced mother of a troubled teenager who begins to use drugs, is forced to seek the help of her irresponsible ex-husband. Miguel is a young man who unwittingly gets involved in drug business, in spite of his grandmother's best efforts. Together, the three stories represent the struggle of all Puerto Ricans to survive the ever-rising wave of corruption and crime that has infiltrated every level of Puerto Rican society.

An engaging and rich depiction of a corrupt society and the difficult choices made by the protagonists, this film flows in a very naturalistic style. The acting is wonderful, more so when you consider that many of the cast are non-professionals! The script captures in a very real way the idiosyncrasies and attitudes of the modern Puerto Rican. In all, I truly recommend it.
